Flight Delayed or Cancelled? You could be owed up to £530
Sun loungers, warm nights, piña coladas on the beach – there’s nothing better than the anticipation of an upcoming holiday. And nothing worse when your airline lets you down. If your flight has been delayed or cancelled in the last six years (yep, it goes that far back!) you could be entitled to €600 (£530) in compensation.
That sounds too good to be true. How do I qualify?
If you answer yes to these questions then you’ve got a good chance.
• Did you arrive at your destination more than three hours late?
• Did you depart from a European airport (using any airline) OR did you arrive in a European airport using an European airline?
• Was the delay due to something other than bad weather or crew strikes?
YES, YES, YES! How can I claim?
You need the booking reference, details of the flight (the number and distance flown in km), length of the delay and reason for the delay. You should then contact the airline by phone or visit their website to get a claim form (however some airlines ask you to write to them). If you don’t have time for admin, you can use a company like Flight Right who will do it for you. It’ll be speedier and hassle-free, but they’ll take a 15% cut.
How much compensation will I get?
It really depends. Here’s a rough guide…
Delay to arrival | Flight Distance | Compensation |
3 hours or more | Less than 1,500km | €250 |
1,500km to 3,500km | €400
More than 1,500km and within EU | €400
3 to 4 hours | More than 3,500km, between an EU and non-EU airport | €300 |
4 hours or more | More than 3,500km, between an EU and non-EU aiport | €600 |
MOXI Round-Up
If you’ve had to deal with the frustrating experience of a flight delay or cancellation you have the right to be compensated under EU law (NOTE: apply before Brexit in 2019!). So, if you’re dealing with the airline direct don’t let them find some excuse or loophole to get out of it. Even if the delay is due to a technical fault, they still have to pay you. If they reject your claim or you don’t hear back from them after eight weeks, contact the Cival Aviation Authority.
